How do you like the tegu?? Is it a good pet? I've been considering getting one for a couple months now. I've had snakes all my life (I currently have a ball python) but these are just so appealing to me!! They're so beautiful!

They are very aggressive until they get big. I had a juvenile. Get one either very young or an adult. If its young you can hold it every day for an hour and it should get used to you. Keep in mind they do get very large, so you really need to work on taming it. And invest in cat gloves. Feed dead so it doesn't get even more aggressive.

I loved my tegu, and he tolerated me.

They are very smart as far as reptiles go. Mine was potty trained to go in a cat box. (it takes forever to do that, but totally worth it)

As far as this being your first monitor, you may want to try with a Savannah first. They're a little calmer and more personable.

I heard that they are terribly intelligent and grow very large! They seem like such beautiful and interesting reptiles!

I'll look into the Savannah, they are on my list!! I've had many different lizards and snakes, but never a monitor! It sounds like they're a lot of work, but totally worth it. Thanks!

^_^ The trick is taming them so they can roam free around your house during the day and spend the night in a crate like a dog does. Just watch other pets around them so they don't eat the cat or something.

That sounds so cool!! Do you need to make them a warm spot in the house, I wonder... Oh my! Don't want him munching on my mom's little dog!!!

Well usually when you have one you have a reptile room at that point. But yes, you need to keep your house warm, or at least the room it's living in warm. With a heat pad in the crate. One of those ones from CVS for people, the reptiles ones get too hot, believe it or not.

Wow!! You just need a heating pad then? That's crazy!

Just make sure it warm enough and you should be fine. Just make sure you do a lot of research anyway

About a year. Just got it a two weeks ago, so haven't probed it yet for gender. Just getting to the point where I can pick it up, actually.
